Hi, it’s Adam Heller, creator of Zero Pain Now, and author of the book, Adam Heller’s Zero Pain Now. In the news today, Governor Mark Dayton had surgery for stenosis. Can surgery end the pain or discomfort caused by stenosis? Well, what is stenosis?
First of all, stenosis just means narrowing. Spinal stenosis, a very common diagnosis for back pain, means the narrowing of the spine. The results can be pain, tingling, burning, numbness or weakness.
What we found after thirteen years of research however, is that almost never does stenosis or spinal stenosis actually cause back pain. It would take an awful lot of narrowing, an extreme amount of narrowing, for the spine to actually push on nerves and create this pain.
What we found is that almost all ongoing, chronic, repetitive, recurrent pain, back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, is caused psychologically. It originates in the brain, not in the spine, not stenosis. The long-term effects are pain, tingling, burning, numbness and weakness.
There are actual physical changes that take place. People often ask. “Is the pain my head?” No, the pain is real. The pain is physical. The pain is searing, burning. It’s horrible. However, what we’ve found after all these years of research is that the pain rarely originates in the spine, and it actually originates in the brain.
I’ll tell you an example. There’s someone who I used to play squash. Squash is a game similar to racketball, and he had spinal stenosis. He’d been diagnosed and had terrible, terrible pain. What he’d have to do is warm up in the swimming pool for 45 minutes to loosen up his back, and then he was able to play squash, which is a very vigorous game, no pain, and then after he stopped playing, eventually the pain would come back.
Well, logic would tell you that if you really had this narrowing of the spine that was causing your pain, swimming is not going to unnarrow your spine and allow you to go play a very vigorous game like squash. What happened is, what the swimming does is it increases blood flow. When you understand what really causes pain, you can end it yourself.
The physical causes of pain are actually blood vessels constricting less blood flow, and there’s oxygen in blood, and it’s an oxygen deprivation that causes the pain. It originates in the brain, stress, tension, and then these physical changes take place, just like the friend of mine I played squash with.
When you understand what’s really going on, you can use the information. You can heal your own pain, and you can go back and get the full physical freedom that you’ve been long for.
The truth, in this case, really will set you free, because the truth is, is the cause of back pain is almost never originating in the spine. Yes, these abnormalities can be there. However, science has proven over and over again that they rarely cause pain. As I always say, arm yourself with information.
