Facet Joint Syndrome
Facet joints (joints with small faces) connect your vertebrae together. They are found at every spinal level (except at the top level) and provide about 20% of the torsional (twisting) stability in the neck and the lower back. They provide a smooth slippery surface allowing you to bend and twist. And they limit your range of motion just enough to prevent accidental injury of your spinal cord. When they hurt, it can seriously impact your ability to move normally. This restricts your normal range of motion and your functioning.
Facet Joint Syndrome Symptoms
A painful cervical (neck) facet joint can immobilize your neck, cause an ache in your shoulder, and force you to turn your whole body just to look right or left. Pain from a lumbar facet joint may leave you unable to stand up straight, hunched over (Antalgic position) while you walk, and suffering a deep ache from your buttocks to the back of your thighs (sciatica). This is called Facet Joint Syndrome.
Facet joints are a common source of back and neck pain. In fact, lumbar facet joints are involved in nearly a third of chronic lower back pain cases and nearly half of all chronic neck pain cases. This is where you have a misaligned vertebrae in your neck or your back. Think of it as hard bone out of position pressing on soft nerve. This is called a pinched nerve. These cases respond very favorably to a chiropractic adjustment, which moves the bone back into place and takes pressure off, and thus relieving the pinched nerve.
The best form of passive exercise for the spine is the chiropractic adjustment. Of course the chiropractic adjustment takes pressure off the nervous system and allows it to function at 100%. By removing the interference the body’s own “innate intelligence” is thus able to heal itself. Only 10% of the nervous system causes pain. We’re concerned with that but we’re also concerned with the 90% of the nervous system (silent) that is functioning and performance. If you had a pebble in your shoe, would you take a Tylenol, or would you remove the pebble? We remove your pebbles. It just so happens that they are usually in your neck and your back.
